MN Secretary of State Steve Simon on Voting Rights - the many new voting laws passed in the most recent legislative session, and what’s left to do.
Steve Simon is Minnesota’s 22nd Secretary of State. He was sworn into office on January 5, 2015, and as Minnesota’s chief elections administrator pledged in his inaugural address to “work with anyone, of any political affiliation, from any part of our state” to protect, defend, and strengthen the right to vote in Minnesota.
As Secretary of State, he partners with township, city, and county officials to organize elections on behalf of Minnesota’s nearly four million eligible voters, and to ensure that the election system is fair.
September - Climate Change; the Minneapolis Climate Equity Plan

Sept 7th, 7-8:30 (on Zoom) with guest Kim Havey, the Minneapolis Health Department’s Director of Sustainability, and White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council member.
Director Havey will discuss the Minneapolis Climate Equity Plan, passed in July 2023 by the Mpls City Council. His department will be responsible for implementing much of the plan.
Mayor Frey's proposed budget invests $10 million annually into the Minneapolis Climate Legacy Initiative to support the City’s climate goals over the next decade. This investment includes $4.7 million toward weatherizing all homes in Minneapolis, $1.4 million in workforce training, and $850,000 in the City’s tree canopy program. The budget also includes $730,000 toward electric vehicle charging stations throughout Minneapolis.

Live Civic Buzz! MPD Chief Brian O’Hara to Speak on Police Reform and Public Safety

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara will be the guest speaker at the Civic Buzz in May. The Civic Buzz Town Hall event will be live and open to the public at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Avenue South, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. The event is co-sponsored by Plymouth’s Reimagining Community Safety Committee and Mill City Commons.
O’Hara will talk about the complexities of police reform and his plans to increase public safety in the City of Minneapolis. O’Hara was named Minneapolis Police Department chief in November 2022 after previously serving as the deputy mayor of the City of Newark. Throughout his career, Chief O’Hara has worked collaboratively with communities and other public safety divisions, including alternatives to policing strategies, to enact enduring change. Chief O’Hara will be joined by Chief of Staff Christopher Gainer and Inspector Katie Blackwell of the MPD.
