On the anniversary of George Floyd’s death
One year ago today, George Floyd’s death shook the world — then changed the world. May 25, 2020 is “a date that will live in infamy.” We witnessed the murder of Mr. Floyd when a bystander filmed a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Today we stand with our brothers and sisters across Minneapolis in condemning police brutality. We remember George Floyd, Daunte Wright, Philando Castile and innumerable other Black men and women who have been killed by police officers in Minnesota and across the United Sates. But it is not enough to just remember — it is time to take action, to address systemic racism, and to force lasting change in how Black men, women and children are treated. Please join LWVMpls in making a commitment to address social justice and inequality issues:
“We Resolve: First, That the League advocates against systemic racism in the justice system and, at a minimum, for preventing excessive force and brutality by law enforcement. We also call for prompt actions by all League members to advocate within every level of government to eradicate systemic racism, and the harm that it causes.” [From LWVUS]
