Minneapolis League of Women Voters (LWVMpls) released their 2021 candidate surveys, a nonpartisan tool to help Minneapolis voters make informed decisions as they go to the polls beginning with early voting on Friday, September 17. 

Included are survey responses from candidates running for Mayor, City Council, Park and Recreation Board, and Board of Estimate and Taxation. Candidates were able to provide narrative answers to questions in their own words. Voters are invited to read the unedited responses on LWVMpls’ website. 

All candidates who filed for office by the deadline were invited to respond to the questionnaires. Questions were created by LWVMpls members, with the exception of those for the Park and Recreation Board survey. The latter was a collaborative effort between LWVMpls, Minneapolis Parks Foundation, Green Minneapolis, and The Loppet Foundation. 

Candidates were given a deadline to respond to questionnaires. Survey responses are first listed by Ward (for City Council) or District (for Park and Recreation Board) — then alphabetically. 

The survey questions for the four races cover the following general topics:

Mayor and City Council: Public safety, support for the proposed Government Structure: Executive Mayor – Legislative Council amendment and the Public Safety amendment, the Minneapolis 2040 plan, affordable housing and homelessness, climate energy goals and public/mass transit. 

Park and Recreation Board: Reason for running, support for the 20-year Neighborhood Park Plan and the 10-year Parks for All Comprehensive Plan, equitable access and investment, racial equity and cultural inclusion, funding and investments, strategies for climate sustainability and environmental stewardship, top 3 priorities for next 4 years.

Board of Estimate and Taxation: Three top priorities, means to accomplish goals, and candidate background.

LWVMpls is a non-partisan, non-profit organization which promotes the active and informed involvement of citizens in the voting process. LWVMpls does not support or oppose political parties or individual candidates.
