Civic Buzz - League of Women Voters Minneapolis
The Civic Buzz meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Black Forest Inn Banquet Room, Nicollet Avenue S. at 26th St. W. in Minneapolis. We gather at 5:30. You can order drinks and food and we begin our meeting at 6:15 and end at 7:30. Each month we have a speaker followed by discussion. Each month will have a new topic/issue for discussion. Anyone interested in discussing pressing topics related to citizen engagement are invited. A discussion with the League of Women Voters means that all voices are heard and we take opinions seriously. In the end, we all learn something new and hopefully have a broader understanding of the issues. Civic Buzz is co-sponsored by Whittier Alliance.

Reawakening of the Sanctuary Movement

Sanctuary Protections, ICE & Immigration

Speaker John Keller Executive Director

Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota

Come and hear, discuss the idea of Sanctuary protections for immigrants that are increasingly at risk of arrest, detention and deportation under the new Administration. Minnesota has seen the 3rd highest increase in ICE arrests during the first year of this Administration. Immigrants with decades of residency in Minnesota and the U.S., many with U.S. born children, are experiencing an enforcement environment devoid of humanitarian or prosecutorial discretion at the same time more and more resources are sought to increase the hiring of federal agents, build a wall on our southern border, and states and municipalities are targeted for being “sanctuary cities.” We will also discuss multiple concepts of sanctuary from schools to faith communities to cities.
