LWV MPLS responds to The MN Department of Human Rights report
LWVMpls supports the findings and recommendations of the MN Department of Human Rights investigation into the City of Minneapolis and the police department. Our public safety study last year identified many of the same issues. Our research, which leveraged academic and practical strategies as well as success stories, led us to a clear set of positions for action that are highly aligned with the state's recommendations. The problems have been defined and the needed changes are clear.
Specifically, the League endorses the following measures: public health approach to public safety, diverse response types (mental health, etc), cultural reform and expanded training within the MPD, record keeping and transparency on police performance, external review and citizen involvement, legislation and contract recommendations.
