May Civic Buzz: Minneapolis Public Schools- An Update from the School Board

Join us to hear a panel of current Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education Members discuss the challenges facing the district today and the work to close the achievement gap and ensure that all students receive a quality education. The panel will include the Chair Kim Ellison, who is an at-large Member, Adriana Cerrillo, who represents District 4, and Sharon El-Amin, who represents District 2.
Kim Ellison is Chair of the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education. She brings a wealth of experience to the school board working for organizations that serve students and families and a background informed by 12 years of teaching. Kim is passionate about addressing the achievement gap and is a firm believer that building relationships with students is key to their success. Kim is an At-Large Member who has served on the board since 2012.
Adriana Cerrillo is a community activist and organizer advocating for policies to protect and include marginalized communities. She represents District 4, a south central and west district which includes downtown, Uptown, and the Cedar-Isles-Dean neighborhoods. For her work on behalf of undocumented immigrants, youth, and students in Florida, Adriana received the NAACP’s 2013 Unsung Heroine Award. Adriana has continued her community organizing work in Minnesota, teaching an American Basic Civics Program, working to protect immigrant and refugee rights, and working as a family advocate in the Minneapolis Public Schools. She has served on the board since 2020.
Sharon El-Amin represents District 2, the Northside Minneapolis area. Sharon brings over 15 years of business experience managing budgets, making tough decisions, and hiring and working with staff to service the needs of the community. Sharon is the founder of P.A.R.O.S (Parents Alliance Reclaiming Our Schools) founded in 2019. She continues to be actively involved in the fight for a quality education for all children. Sharon has served on the board since 2020.
