The LWVMpls Annual Meeting was a huge success due to the great planning efforts of the members of Unit 25/29. Here are some highlights:
Rosemary Lawrence was the winner of this year’s Bess Mlarnik Award. Well deserved! Among many other contributions, Rosemary agreed to become chair/co-chair of LWV Mpls’ Election Services project, working with the City of Minneapolis’ Election and Voter Services Department to provide “League Volunteers” who assist the City on Election Day. This project provides dozens of reliable and dedicated individuals each year for specific Election Day projects, for which the City pays LWVMpls. This is a “good government” project as well as a fundraiser for the League. We are grateful to Rosemary for all that she has done, and plans to continue to do, for LWVMpls.
Our speaker, Duchess Harris, gave a fascinating talk sharing the experiences and stories of her grandmother as one of the 11 black women human computers at NASA. Ms. Harris is Professor and Chair of the American Studies Department at Macalester College. A highly sought after speaker on civic concerns, civil rights and black women mathematicians at NASA, Dr. Harris is the author of four books.
At that meeting, we elected a new President, Sandy Hull and two new Board members, Canan Karatekin and Anita Newhouse. We thank outgoing Co-Presidents Marion Hall and Dot Lilja for their outstanding service for the last two years.
Input was gathered from the membership about Program topics for the 2017-18 year. More on that soon.
We heard from a number of attendees of their willingness to volunteer in a specific way during 2017-18. Are you interested in having an active role in an organization that has been around for nearly 100 years? If so, email us at [email protected] and we can explore opportunities together.
