Action alert: Tell your senators to support H.R. 8

Two mass shootings in one week, resulting in the tragic death of 18 Americans, should provide ample evidence that curbing gun violence must be a priority for our country. Our hearts go out to the families and friends in Atlanta and Boulder who are grieving the loss of loved ones. And, it’s not enough to send thoughtful condolences, we urge our elected officials to address gun violence and immediately take action to pass common sense gun safety measures.

The League of Women Voters Minneapolis stands with the majority of Americans (93%) in support of H.R. 8: Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021. The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 on March 11, 2021 and we urge the Senate to take action so President Biden can sign it into law.

Contact Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith to ask them to support HR 8.

What is H.R.8: Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021?

This bill establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties (i.e., unlicensed individuals).

Specifically, it prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check.

The prohibition does not apply to certain firearm transfers or exchanges, such as a gift between spouses in good faith.
