Black Male Students and the Minneapolis Public Schools
The Office of Black Male Student Achievement was created specifically to address the needs of the largest demographic group within MPS. It represents an equitable approach to tackling the challenges that exist for the school district’s black male students.
Our guest speaker will be Michael Walker. Mr. Walker is the inaugural Director for the Office of Black Male Student Achievement, where his sole responsibility is changing outcomes for Black Males who attend Minneapolis Public Schools. He brings a career focus on youth development and assisting black youth to achieve success. Walker worked as a career and college center coordinator for AchieveMpls at Roosevelt High School from 2006 to 2009 before serving Minneapolis Public Schools as Roosevelt’s dean of students from 2009 to 2011 and assistant principal from 2011 to 2014.

6:15 pm Speaker
6:30-7:30 pm Questions and Discussion
Black Forest Inn Banquet Room
Nicollet Avenue South at 26th St. W.
We gather at 5:30 in Black Forest Inn’s banquet room. You can order drinks and food and we begin our meeting at 6:15. Each month we have a speaker followed by discussion. Each month will have a new topic/issue for discussion.
All LWVMpls members are invited along with their friends and anyone interested in discussing pressing topics related to citizen engagement. Topics studied and discussed in the past year were the Voting Rights Act, Amending the U.S. Constitution, and Money in Politics, School Culture, Winning Campaigns, and Voter Turnout.
We would love to have you join us. A discussion with our organization means that all voices are heard and we take opinions seriously. In the end, we all learn something new and hopefully have a broader understanding of the issues.
